Dear Julia

Letters to the Prime Minister

Notes

Hey Julia — how hilarious is @GetUp’s enrol-to-vote video?! Brilliant!

What’re your thoughts on the impact of young people and the youth vote in this year’s election?  I understand KRudd had a gang of bright young things working with him… but from what I can gather, everyone hated them?

Not sure if it’s because I have a chip on my shoulder or something, but I often get the idea that young people aren’t taken very seriously.  Maybe no one takes me seriously because I am a complete clueless moron, and I egotistically turn that on the rest of my peers.

But, then I realise that I’m not exactly the centre of the universe, and yeah — the attitudes seem to be across the board.

The “Gen-Y” stereotype isn’t helping us, either, is it?

Anyway — my point is, I am just curious about how seriously you’re going to take the opinions of young people in this election.  You’re obviously very concerned about the redneck anxious electorate…are you taking into consideration the views of people who’ll be running the country when you’re running red lights?

Sure, right now we’re brats who’ll threaten to vote Green and make spoof videos — but remember: you were a rabble-rouser back in the day… and now look how far you’ve come!

So since we’re the ones who have lots to gain from

  • effective climate change policy;
  • youth mental health funding;
  • migration policies that encourage inclusivity and true mateship rather than emphasising difference and fear;
  • communication and information policies that aren’t stuck in the dark age;
  • etc

and have lots to lose if things go gaga on these issues… well.

How are we going feel about that when we walk into our little cardboard cupboards on election day?

Sorry if this seems a little passive-agressive.

I’m in a bit of a frump (I couldn’t right to you yesterday because I didn’t have anything nice to say).

Even though everyone was bitching about KRudd’s High-School Chess Team team, I hope you’re not completely ignoring youth views and only listening to crumbly old ALP hacks and pollsters.

Well, I suppose since you’re doing pretty much the same crap as he did (and in that once case, the same crap as Howard…), I should feel slightly optimistic on that point.

But the post #spillard buzz has certainly worn off.

So I might go try to sleep off this hangover.  I’ll speak to you soon.

Regards
Sunili
